This is the third in a series of three quick devotional posts highlighting this amazing passage from Isaiah 9:6. “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.”
When our first child was born, our lives changed drastically. The after picture of our lives was unrecognizable compared to the before picture. That oldest child is now in college. Before we know it, we will be empty nesters and we will again just be a couple living together without children in the house. Will our lives go back to the way they were before we had kids? Will we be just like the childless couple we were 19 years ago? No! We were not just changed for a short season. We were changed forever.
When Christ was born, the world was changed in the same way. When he completed his time on earth and ascended into heaven, the world didn’t go back to being as it was before Christ’s birth. The world was forever different, transformed, renewed.
Just as a new baby transforms the makeup of a family forever, Christ’s life on earth transformed the course of history. Our relationship with God would never be the same.
Read 2 Corinthians 5:19a
Here is how the Message puts it:
God put the world square with himself through the Messiah, giving the world a fresh start by offering forgiveness of sins.
What emotions does the phrase fresh start bring up for you?
In what areas of your life do you long for a fresh start?
Ask God to help you bring those areas to him. He desires to take our burdens; he is trustworthy and kind. He is offering you peace today.
